These tofu recipes smelled amazing. Especially the tofu crumbles! Dude when the crumbles were in the oven they smelled INSANE.

I have a soy allergy. Well I do eat soy sauce and soybean oil (from junk food) but I try to avoid all other soy products so I didn’t tried these recipes below. I made these then put them in the fridge for Mark to eat through out the week. While I can’t confirm or deny how awesome these recipes came out I can only say I used a lot of self control to not take a bite of a freaking crispy taco.

Oh yeah, a reasonable person would have pressed and/or marinated the tofu but I’m too lazy for that. Feel free to do the right thing. The crumbles don’t need to be pressed according to the original recipe which is linked below.

Vegan BBQ Tofu Sandwich
If you’ve been around here for a while then you know that I can do some vegan george foreman magic on the “grill”. I’m guessing you could just use a plain skillet if you don’t have a grill.

1 container extra firm tofu, BBQ sauce, bread of some sort (I got mine at whole foods)

  1. Cut tofu in half
  2. Coat in BBQ sauce
  3. Place tofu on grill. Add multiple coats of sauce. Let it grill til sauce seems caramelized on the tofu. ENJOY

Vegan Sweet + Spicy Crispy Tofu Glaze
I love this glaze. This is a thicker version of the vegan lo mein sauce I’ve shared here on the blog a million times. You can make this as spicy as you want. Feel free to add extra chili flakes or sriracha. I think fresh ginger is the winning piece to this sauce. But you aren’t here for the sauce. You need to know about this super crispy baked tofu. SOOOO EASY.

1.2 brick extra firm tofu, 2 TB soy sauce, 1 TB oil, corn starch

sauce: 1 cup water, 1/4 cup soy sauce, 3 TB brown sugar, 1-3 ts freshly grated ginger (depending on your taste buds), 2 TB corn starch + 2 TB water

  1. Cube tofu and carefully mix with oil and soy sauce. Try not to break the tofu into crazy pieces.
  2. If you have a lot of liquid you can drain some or not. Coat tofu with corn starch or any type of flour. Mix the tofu and keep adding more corn starch til nicely coated.
  3. Bake in oven til crispy – 350 degrees about 45 minutes give or take.
  4. Make sauce by mixing water, soy sauce, sugar and ginger together. Once sauce starts to simmer add corn starch that’s dissolved in cool water. Whisk until thick. Let the mixture boil for a second to ensure the corn starch thickens. If too thick add water, if too thin add more corn starch/water.
  5. Mix tofu with sauce. ENJOY

Vegan Bean + Beef Tofu Chili
I made this the lazy way. You’re supposed to simmer everything in a pot but I pretty much just mixed the crumbles with everything else as soon as they came out of the oven. Why wash an extra pot?

I used half a brick of tofu in the video and just part of a can of beans & sauce. Feel free to make a large batch!

1 package extra firm tofu, 1 TB oil, 1 TB soy sauce, 2-3 TB chili seasoning, 1 ts brown sugar, 1/2 cup tomato sauce (more or less) + beans & diced tomatoes (both canned), hot sauce optional

  1. Crumble tofu with your finger tips
  2. Mix oil, soy sauce and spices well then add tofu. Mix well.
  3. Add tofu to baking sheet. Bake til golden brown. 350 degrees for 30-45 minutes. Stir along the way.
  4. Once tofu is done mix with tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, brown sugar & beans. Goal is to dry the tofu out in the oven then re-hydrate with sauce. You can do this on the stove top and simmer it but I just mixed mine in a bowl. Add more spices if your chili is weak. ENJOY

Vegan Beefy Tofu Crumbles Tacos
These smelled so good in the oven. I’m glad I still have taco shells left over. I need tacos, yo. I used half a brick of tofu. I used store bought seasoning but you can just blend different spices together. Think cumin, chili powder, onion & garlic powder, etc). I used plain cashew yogurt for the sour cream effect.

Vegan Chocolate Tofu Pudding – Protein!
Feel free to make this as sweet as you’d like. You could use powdered sugar if you wanted this super thick. I used maple syrup which I LOVE. I took a tiny taste to see what this pudding was like. An interesting subtle tofu taste but overall pretty good. Left overs in the fridge might get a little watery on top according to the original recipe so just stir it and it will be fine.

  1. “even tho he’s an artist, i couldn’t ‘one up’ him. i had to let him shine,” reminds me of the time i invited an elderly friend to have lunch with me at a local restaurant. it was a mini-celebration of my b.day.

this was the friend who turned me on to Patti Smith’s book “just kids,” about Patti’s relationship with Robert Mapplethorpe. when the book first came out my friend happened upon it at the library and devoured it, admiring their commitment to their artistic visions.

at the time, my friend called me up raving about the book, insisting it would win all kinds of awards (which it did), and that i had to read it. i promptly did and enjoyed it very much.

back to the restaurant: of course, we’re seated right next to Patti Smith, who my elderly friend doesn’t recognize — my friend just went on and on and on about the break up with her husband, something that occurred over 40 years ago, a usual topic of rant for her.

sighing, as i see Patti Smith gathering up her things to leave, i began to apologize to Patti asking forgiveness for imposing. i said, “i’m so sorry but i fear my friend’s wrath if i don’t say something, because my friend is such a big fan of yours. she loved your book so much.”

“oh,” Patti says, “that’s okay,” and the ladies commence to chat for an hour about all sorts of things.

of course i let the ladies shine. after all, one is elderly and the other was the artist among us.

post script: love your cooking, commitment to art, and banter with mr. man.

    girl, i’m watchin’ you! 😀

    • Yes! Just keep an eye on it while you’re cooking because it might dry out and burn faster. Let us know how it goes! I’m curious about this.

  2. OMG! I just love watching your vlogs! You inspire me…your crack me up….most importantly your simply made dishes makes me sooo hungry! Do you have an actual cookbook? I would love to order one if you do. I am not vegan but I’m teally interested in that lifestyle. If you don’t have one in the market you should seriously consider having one out there with all your terrific vegan dishes that you have made! Love ya
